* The Central Asia Institute (CAI): a non-profit founded by Greg Mortenson "to promote and supoprt community-based education, especially for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan." After meeting Mortenson and hearing him speak about his experiences with promoting education in developing countries, NogFod co-founder Julian Jung was inspired. He convinced co-founder Erik Berg to read Mortenson's book, Three Cups of Tea, and learn more about his organization. Due to the similarities in the missions of the CAI and NogFod, we decided this would be an appropriate organization to be the beneficiary of our charitable contributions. You can learn more about the CAI at www.ikat.org.

* Citizen Schools: founded in Dorchester, MA in 1994, Citizen Schools currently partners with middle schools in seven states. Citizen Schools utilizes "citizen teachers," non-teacher professionals, to provide lessons and apprenticeships in their respective fields to young students during the critical middle school transition years. As a 10-year public school teacher NogFod co-founder Erik Berg is impressed with Citizen Schools' ability to extend young students' educations beyond the limited time they spend in the classroom, and to provide them with exposure to real-world experiences and professions during their formative years. NogFod donations will be directed towards Citizen Schools programs in Massachusetts. You can learn more about Citizen Schools at www.citizenschools.org.

* Jumpstart: a non-profit that recognizes the inequlaity in preparedness of yound students entering school. Jumpstart connects at-risk preschool children with caring adults to build literacy and language skills and social and emotional readiness. Research has shown that early education is one of the most powerful predictors of later educational and lifelong success. Jumpstart works nationally to create one-to-one partnerships between trained college students and young children early on in their education to prepare them for kindergarten and provide a powerful and lasting impact. You can learn more about Jumpstart at www.jstart.org.

* KIVA : a non-profit with a mission to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty. Donations are made to KIVA in a form of a loan directed towards a specific project. NogFod will donate your money towards projects that will promote education. One of the great features of KIVA loans is that the loan is repaid by the recipient so that money can be used to have a positive impact over and over and over again. Your small donation can have a lasting and perpetual impact in the world. You can learn more about KIVA at www.kiva.org.

* UNICEF: the United Nations Children's Fund is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. NogFod donations made to UNICEF are earmarked for their "Basic Education and Gender Equality" focus area. From UNICEF: "Education is a fundamental human right: Every child is entitled to it. It is critical to our development as individuals and as societies, and it helps pave the way to a successful and productive future." Read more about UNICEF's education work here.

* While traveling in India, Anokhee Mepani was inspired to launch Learn to Love Inc. a non-profit organization that partners with the Indian Association for Promotion of Adoption and Child Welfare to assist underprivileged children. Donations to her chairty will support the health, education and emotional well being of impoverished and disabled orphans in Mumbai.

* Concept Units Foundation is committed to helping less privileged children by giving them quality education. They believe that education is one of the most valuable commodities that we can provide that will build a sustainable and secure future for a community. CUF was established on the 31st August 2006, as a Non Governmental Organization, our mandate is to respond to the ever increasing number of children who are less privileged i.e. orphans and street children. The group is also to respond to the need for quality Day Care services for these vulnerable children.

*Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national, nonprofit children's literacy program that works with medical providers to reach the children at greatest risk - children aged 6 months to 5 years living at or near poverty. Medical providers participating in ROR give books to their youngest low-income patients at checkups and advise their parents about the importance of reading. More than 20 million books have been distributed through ROR, which currently serves 25 percent of the most impoverished children in the U.S.

More than 50,000 doctors and nurses have been trained by ROR since its founding in 1989. This year ROR will provide 5.7 million new books to
3.5 million children at 4,121 health care sites in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. For further information, please visit ROR's website at www.reachoutandread.org.

Why do we donate profits to charity?

Herbert Spencer (an English philosopher and coiner of the term "survival of the fittest" to describe Charles Darwin's conception of natural selection) said, "The great aim of education is not knowledge but action." The NogFod founders agree with Spencer's statement wholeheartedly. Having been fortunate to receive quality educations ourselves we feel it is our responsibility to use that education to take action to provide opportunities for education to others around the world.

Why do we focus on education?

We here at NogFod feel passionately that education is the key to solving the world's problems. Whether in the United States or in a developing country, education will unlock the door to a successful future for humankind on this planet. Education is the key to gender and racial equality. Education is the key to solving global warming. Education is the key to ending world hunger. Education is the key to eliminating the cycle of poverty. Education is the key to stopping global population growth.

To do our part we decided to create thought-provoking designs on high quality apparel and to donate a large portion of our profits to education-related charities throughout the world. You can do your part by spreading the word about the importance of education and the role NogFod is playing in raising money for education-related charities.
